Instructions

  1. In a stand‑mixer's bowl, combine the flour, instant yeast, salt and sugar.
  2. Add the warm milk and egg, then mix on low speed (speed 2) for about one minute.
  3. Add the softened butter and continue kneading for an additional three minutes, or hand‑knead until the dough is smooth.
  4. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface, divide into 16 equal pieces, and shape each piece into a smooth ball.
  5. Arrange the balls in an 11‑by‑11‑inch square pan (or any similarly sized pan). Cover and let rest for 10‑15 minutes while you preheat the oven to 400 °F (200 °C).
  6. Brush the tops of the rolls with a little milk, then bake for 10‑15 minutes, or until golden brown.
  7. Remove from the oven and immediately brush with melted butter. Serve warm.

Tips

Use instant or rapid‑rise yeast for the quick proof. If you don’t have a stand mixer, a vigorous hand‑knead works fine. Adjust baking time based on your oven’s performance.

About this recipe

The rolls are soft on the inside with a lightly crisp, golden crust. They’re brushed with milk before baking for a subtle shine, then finished with melted butter for extra richness. Serve them warm straight from the oven, or keep them sealed in an airtight container for a couple of days.

Perfect as a side for soups, salads, or any main dish, these rolls also make a tasty base for sliders or mini sandwiches. Their quick rise time means you won’t have to wait for hours, making them ideal for busy weeknight meals.
